VFW Commander-in-Chief Visits Naval Base San Diego
By Walter T. Ham IV, Naval Base San Diego Public Affairs SAN DIEGO (NNS), Nov. 8, 2008--During a visit to Southern California military installations Nov. 5, the head of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) visited Naval Base San Diego (NBSD).
Glen Gardner, elected as the commander-in-chief of the 1.6 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars in August, toured the Navy's largest surface forces installation on the west coast to meet with Navy leaders and Sailors. He was accompanied by VFW Assistant Director of Field Operations Larry Berman and San Diego-area Claims Representative Russ McKamey.
"The VFW is a great American organization that provides outstanding support for our veterans," said NBSD Commanding Officer Capt. Ricky L. Williamson. "I was happy we had the opportunity to host their leader on NBSD."

'Controversy Over War Memorials' Veterans Groups Ask U.S. Supreme Court to Save Memorials
WASHINGTON, Nov 11, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/--Today, representatives from the largest veterans organizations including The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH), held a news conference at the National Press Club to highlight Pleasant Grove City v. Summum, an historic case that impacts war memorials across the country. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments tomorrow.
"This Veterans' Day is a unique convergence; today we honor our veterans' sacrifice; but at the same time, we have to fight to keep their memorials from being removed," said Kelly Shackelford, chief counsel of Liberty Legal Institute, the non-profit legal organization representing the veterans.
